Custom HRK VCA Compressor – The New Legend

The SSL G-Series console master bus compressor was the iconic compressor used in large SSL studio mixing desks.

The original design of the G-SSL compressor was based on the dbx discrete transistors VCA modules, characteristic for their look of black, silver and gold box.

Unfortunately, 99% of currently made G-SSL compressors use the same VCA Integrated Circuits produced by the THAT Corp., not discrete transistors VCA modules. The use of the IC is cheaper to mass-produce compressors nowadays.

It means that all G-SSL new units and G-SSL variants are built using the same VCA-compressor integrated circuit.

HRK has developed the custom hybrid discrete version of the VCA block, made with NOS Military Grade transistors from the ’80s. The HRK design is not a copy of the dbx module but a Bart Hrk propitiatory design.

CS566 VCA compressor is handcrafted using New-Old-Stock military grade transistors made in the ’80s. Similar to the original dbx modules used in the vintage SSL compressors, which were made of discrete transistors.

As a result, the HRK VCA Compressor delivers a tone similar to the sound of the iconic classic compressors from the ’80s because of the custom design and genuine NOS discrete transistors.

Solid State Drive | Console Emulator

The HRK Solid State Drive is a Studio Console Emulator produces selected harmonics specific for a Large Format Mixing Desk, and it is a propitiatory design concept developed by Bart Hrk.

The Solid State Drive is not a typical overdrive or saturation circuit used in most of the analogue saturation studio gear. The design of the SSD is unique and completely different from the popular products.

Harmonics added by the Console Emulator block are smooth and subtle but quite audibly present at the same time. The Console Emulator will not obscure or damage the intended character of the soundtrack.

The Solid State Drive is a result of a long development process aimed at recreating the experience of the Studio Recording Console.

The Solid State Drive and the VCA Compressor should be used in conjunction to achieve great results for tracking, mastering or any other studio application.

The levels of Vintage Drive and the Solid State Saturation was matched to achieve a comparable tone. Hence the % levels are different.

NOS Military Grade Transistors from ’80s

At the HRK, we work hard to deliver the best experience for our customers. The use of specific components has an immense impact on the sound of the studio equipment.

Modern clones of the classic recording equipment will never sound similar to the originals because the mass production process force manufacturers to use widely available and modern semiconductors. Those components are entirely different from parts used in the old studio devices.

We search and obtain hard to find and unique NOS components from no longer existing manufacturers to bring back the tone and mojo of the vintage analogue gear.

We can use custom selected NOS components to hand build each unit in a short production run. We are not constrained by the unavoidable mass-production rules which are inevitable for big equipment manufacturers.

The Transistors used in the CS566 VCA Compressor are genuine Military Grade and High-Quality silicon transistors. NOS transistors deliver the authentic tone of the ’80s, a bit dark and sweet at the same time.

HRK Blue EQ | Four Band Musical and Smooth Equaliser

The CS566 has a four-band ultra-smooth Blue EQ equaliser. Each band has two selectable frequency settings and a boost/cut range of +/-12dB.

Each band is built around a separate operational amplifier creating an independent circuit section, which reduces the adverse interaction between the EQ bands.

Equaliser band separation dramatically reduces the boost/cut influence between the bands and eliminates the interrelation of EQ sections centre frequencies.

The HRK Blue EQ is a non-destructive and smooth equaliser explicitly designed to create a flexible sound editing tool which will not impose an aggressive attitude and change the original character of the signal.

The frequencies are selected to cover most of the studio applications.
The HF and the LF are shelf-type filters with easy to dial-in musical and gentle curve aspects.

The ML and MH are bell-type filters with progressive and smooth characteristics, delivering the signal correction without the pitch-ringing even at higher boost levels.

The Blue EQ is a transparent equaliser that allows significant processing capabilities while intuitive and easy to use. You simply can’t go wrong using the HRK Blue EQ!

Augmented HRK Active Transformer

The Augmented Active Transformer produces more saturation and harmonics when compared with a standard Active Transformer.

It is why the Augmented Active Transformer is an option as the last stage of the CS566 Channel Strip.

Bart Hrk developed the propitiatory design of an Active Transformer to solve the problems of the common passive transformers.

Passive transformers are susceptible to electromagnetic interferences (50Hz Hum, RF Smog) and the frequency response dependents on load and source impedance, negatively influencing the overall performance of analogue studio equipment.

The HRK Active Transformer delivers the sound that we love, including the harmonics content and the tonal response, and removes all the hassles associated with passive transformers.

The Active Transformer produces a subtle “Air” effect and provides extended LF performance.

The Active Transfomer saturation depends on the output level. Higher output signal levels will saturate the Active Transfomer more, like in the classic studio equipment.

Stereo Buss Operation

The CS566 is designed for the stereo bus processing.

The VCA Compressor sections can be coupled with the supplied linking cable to control the stereo image of the processed signal.

The CS566 is a line-level channels strip. The CS566 is not equipped with a microphone preamplifier.

The input signal should be connected to the rear XLR input.

It is recommended to use -12dB input signal level initially and increase the level signal if required.

However, because we are a small company, we can’t afford to run a grade B outlet shop like big distributors and providing the 30 days return period. We can’t also scrap every returned unit.

This is why we provide the 7 days test period after receiving the package with the ordered items. If you wish to return the item, we will accept the return request, providing that the item is not damaged.
